We've Landed...it's better late than never - Week Feb. 22, 2016

Attention Village Students be sure to share your individual guesses and not your entire class guesses as prize supplies are limited.

During our travels to this tropical country we encountered a bit of bad weather resulting in us landing a couple of days late and a very bumpy ride. We've landed on the country that lies opposite the country of Mozambique. It is the world's fourth-largest island and is twice the size of the State of Arizona. The country's low-lying coastal area gives way to a central plateau. The once densely wooded interior has largely been diminished due to severe soil erosion, deforestation and overgrazing.

The Capital and largest city found here is called Antananarivo with a population of 1.987 million

Government: Multiparty republic.

The population is made of up of these races/ethnic groups Malayo-Indonesian, CĂ´tiers (mixed African, Malayo-Indonesian, French, Indian, Creole, and Comoran.

This island's natural hazards are the periodic cyclone, drought and its locust infestation.

Languages: Malagasy and French (both official), English

Agriculture: coffee, vanilla, sugarcane, cloves, cocoa, rice, cassava (tapioca), beans, bananas, peanuts and livestock products.

Industries: meat processing, soap, breweries, tanneries, sugar, textiles, glassware, cement, automobile assembly plant, paper, petroleum, and tourism.

Natural resources: graphite, chromite, coal, bauxite, salt, quartz, tar sands, semiprecious stones, mica, fish, and hydropower.
